The respondents’ ratings of the individual factors were then bundled in various combinations for a total of 13 subcategories, and their mean values were used to draw up four topical indices: Quality of Urban Living, Getting Settled, Urban Work Life, and Finance & Housing.
The rating process emphasized the respondents’ personal satisfaction with these aspects and considered both emotional topics as well as more factual aspects with equal weight. Participants were asked to rate more than 25 different aspects of urban life abroad on a scale of one to seven. In the current context of a pandemic, and thinking about the transformation of cities and the consequences in the post-Covid period, we wanted to focus on the results of each of the rankings as of 2019, in order to see the global evolution and, specifically, that of Barcelona.For the Expat Insider 2017 survey, respondents were also invited to share their opinions on the city they are currently living in. Only rankings that classify cities have been selected, discarding those where Barcelona is still not top-ranked by the institution that establishes the index. In order to locate each of the rankings according to a subject, a distribution has been made by key areas of development: Culture, Sports and Creativity, Research and Knowledge, Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness, Talent, Urban Quality, Tourism, City Brand and Global Cities and Future Projection. We have worked to identify, visualize and monitor these rankings with the aim of improving the positioning of the city and make it more attractive to talent.
